At this point, in Season One, The Walking Dead was still a young show and hoping to make it to a second season. No one knew how big the show would become. It was still finding its way and the direction of its story, even with having the comic books as source material. Would walkers be able to open doors, pick up and throw items, have some sentience, or would the wonder aimlessly unless there was food braaaaiiiiiiinnnnnns?

At the start of the episode, when Dr. Jenner confronts Rick and the survivors, before he lets them in, he asks if any of them are bit or infected. We believe that at this point in Season One, even when Dr. Jenner was going to whisper to Rick or that the writers just simply missed the continuity between the two moments. Run like hell, that's what! After lots of shooting, fires, close calls and more shooting, everyone hauled ass off the farm.

Everyone got away but Jimmy and Patricia. Andrea is left behind, but still alive. Unfortunately, she's facing a horde of zombies by herself, and her ammunition is running low. But when we catch up with her later, Andrea is saved from certain zombie death by a mysterious cloaked figure who, check this out, has chained up armless zombies with her. Yes, it's the sword-swinging Michonne, a fan fave from the graphic novels who will become a major player next season the zombie slayer will be played by Treme 's Danai Gurira.

We also finally learned what Dr. Jenner whispered to Rick at the CDC: everyone is infected. It doesn't matter if you get bit or scratched by a zombie: if you die, you become a walker. Supposedly, the details of the conversation will spill out this season, but in the meantime I've taken the liberty of speculating on what Jenner muttered. Think about it: Jenner is a strange, seclusive man, but when his time comes to die he just mumbles something about a sled.

Speculation that just leads to eternal speculation — brilliant! Probably the most likely. In answer, he brought the group to the control room and talked about the CDC and how he was the last researcher alive after the rest of the doctors and staff committed suicide - as Jenner put it, "opting out From the control room, Jenner showed the Atlanta survivors a video of "Test Subject 19's" brain, which offered a picture of the infection and how it affected a person's brain before, during, and after death.

It was later revealed that TS was his wife, Candace, the head of research at the CDC who was infected and devoted her failing body to research in an attempt to find a cure. When Dale Horvath asked about the countdown timer on the wall, Dr. Jenner replied that it was counting down to when the generators in the basement would run out of fuel, prompting an explosion set to destroy the entire CDC. Jenner then closed the doors to the computer lab.

The survivors panicked and attempted to flee, but Dr. Jenner sealed the exit doors of the control room, reminding them of his words when he let them in "When I close those doors, they won't open again. He claimed that it was no use anyway since he could not do anything to open the doors to the outside. This caused outrage from the trapped group. He tried to comfort them, saying that the explosion would be peaceful and virtually instantaneous, and Shane attempted to kill him.

Jenner relented after Rick and Carol made a passionate argument and unlocked the control room doors, allowing the survivors to try and find a way out. Before Rick left with the rest of the survivors, Dr. Jenner whispered something inaudible to the audience into his ear. Jacqui was the sole member of the Atlanta group who decided to stay behind with him as the building explodes. Andrea also decided to stay, but Dale convinced her to come with the rest of the group.

Rick finally reveals what Jenner told him before dying: whatever the disease is that's turning everyone into walkers, they all carry it. Rick didn't believe him until Shane Walsh reanimated after Rick killed him without Shane ever being bitten. Edwin decides to commit suicide in the explosion, along with Jacqui, after losing hope in developing a cure.

Edwin was shown to love his wife deeply and was utterly devastated by her tragic death. Edwin praised his wife for her genius in their field of science and claimed that her death was a loss to the world and claimed she could have eventually found a solution to the apocalypse and also claimed he should've died in her place. Edwin's love for his wife was the only reason he chose to stay in the fortified CDC to try and find a solution to the outbreak and tried to follow his late wife's last request to the best of his abilities.

Jacqui is the last person Jenner had contact with before his death, seeming that they committed suicide together in the CDC explosion. When Jacqui makes the choice to stay behind and end her life at the CDC, she spends her final moments with Jenner, holding hands with tears in her eyes and a smile on their faces. Jacqui and Jenner did not interact much before their final moments, mostly because they did not know each other beforehand.

However, they both did agree that dying during the explosion was a better way than suffering from the infection in the future. Jenner seemed to trust and care about Rick's group, as he let them inside the CDC, providing them with food and shelter. He also warned Rick about everyone being already infected. It is possible that he did this out of a sense of guilt and obligation to help people in every way that he could after failing to create a cure for the zombie plague. However, Rick wasn't sure to believe him or not and kept it from the group out of concern.
